(Las Cruces, N.M., October 30, 2010) Dona Ana County Clerk’s Office Election’s Supervisor Bob Bartelsmeyer has been appointed to the Standards Board of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) by Mary Herrera, New Mexico Secretary of State.
Bartelsmeyer will serve along with Secretary of State Mary Herrera on the Standards Board assisting the EAC in carrying out its mandates under the law. Bartelsmeyer has a wide range of elections experience, beginning his career as Lawrence County Clerk/Election Authority in Missouri in 1979. Prior to coming to Dona Ana County, Bartelsmeyer lived in Florida, where he was the Absentee Ballot Coordinator for Palm Beach County.
The Board consists of 110 members, of which 55 are state officials selected by their respective chief state election official. The remaining 55 members are local election officials selected through a process supervised by the chief election official. New Mexico Secretary of State Mary is the chief election official for New Mexico.
About the EAC
The U.S. Election Assistance Commission was established by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA). The EAC is an independent, bipartisan commission charged with developing guidance to meet HAVA requirements, adopting voluntary voting system guidelines, and serving as a national clearinghouse of information about election administration. The EAC also accredits testing laboratories and certifies voting systems, as well as audits the use of HAVA funds. Other responsibilities include maintaining the national mail voter registration form developed in accordance with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.
