The Rape of Europa tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of Europe’s art treasures during the Third Reich and the Second World War. In a journey through seven countries, viewers witness the violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed and warfare and the extraordinary fight by art professionals and ordinary heroes to safeguard, rescue, and return the millions of lost, hidden and stolen treasures. Herb and Dorothy is a warm and engaging documentary about Herb Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, whose passion for art led them to amass, with modest means, one of the most significant contemporary art collections in history. Their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment housed more than 2,000 pieces of art that, in 1992, they moved to the National Gallery of Art. (2009, United States, 89 Minutes).

Seraphine tells the true story of a self-taught artist and cleaning woman, Seraphine Louis, later known as Seraphine de Senlis, who created brilliantly colored canvases painted in secret, inspired by her guardian angel. In 1912 her talent was discovered by Wilhelm Uhde, a German art critic and collector who supported her and eventually exhibited her work in France and elsewhere in Europe. Students will tour The Ginormous Painting Show and make three-dimensional textured paintings with artists Aria Finch and Miranda Howe as part of this popular monthly art program.
Students in grades 3-8 can register for the 10 a.m.- noon sessions, and students in grades 9-12 can register for the 1-3 p.m. session. Call 624-6722, ext. 10 to register.
