Staff Report
Chaves County Sports Report

If the skies clear up — as predicted — and the courts dry off, high school tennis will get underway Friday and Saturday with the 2010 Goddard Invitational.

Eight teams from across New Mexico will compete at Goddard, Roswell and NMMI in both boys and girls brackets.

In addition to the Colts, Coyotes and Rockets, teams will come from AAAA Artesia (a district foe); and AAA Portales and Loving (NMMI district foes), Hope Christian and Raton.

Competition will begin at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday, with all but one championship round match taking place at NMMI.

While it may seem early in the season, Goddard coach Becky Joyce said it’s a good way to kick off the season.

“This tournament is just kind of to get everybody kicked off amd ready to go,” she said. “It’s cold and we’re kind of fighting the weather, but this kind of gets everyone going.”
